The P.A.C.E. Unit is committed to drug and crime interdiction throughout Portage County in an effort to keep our citizens, businesses, and communities safe.
On December 23, 2021, Sheriff Zuchowski’s newly implemented P.A.C.E. Interdiction Team, with assistance from the Portage County Sheriffs Office Drug and Violent Crime Unit conducted a traffic stop near the area of Hayes Avenue and State Route 5 in Ravenna Township.
After making contact with two occupants inside of the vehicle, Deputies identified them as Derrick Keep of Kinsman, Ohio and Elmer Porterfield III of Sharon, Pennsylvania. Porterfield had two active warrants for his arrest through Trumbull County.
K-9 Karo of the Portage County Sheriff's Office K9 Unit alerted to the odor of illegal narcotics inside of the vehicle which lead to a thorough search by Deputy James and Deputy Bradley. Deputies located a plastic bag containing approximately 5 ounces of Methamphetamine in a hidden compartment behind the dashboard, accessed through the glovebox.
Porterfield and Keep (pictured below) were arrested and charged with Trafficking in Methamphetamine (F2), Aggravated Possession of Drugs (F2), and Hidden Compartments in Vehicles (F2). Nice work to Deputy James, Deputy Bradley, and K-9 Karo on this arrest!
The Portage County Sheriff’s Office PACE (Portage Aggressive Crime Enforcement) Unit conducted a traffic stop on 12/17/2021 in the City of Ravenna seizing approximately 75 grams of marijuana, 15 grams of THC Wax, 1.4 lbs of THC edibles, drug paraphernalia and cocaine.
Last evening, Deputy James and Deputy Bradley made a traffic stop near the 9000 block of Stanley Road in Windham for a lanes of travel violation. Following the stop, the driver immediately attempted to flee, but was promptly apprehended by our K9 handler. The driver was found to be driving under suspension and admitted to having a large amount of narcotics in the vehicle.
As a result of the traffic stop, Deputies seized approximately 14 ounces of Methamphetamine, Cocaine, Psilocybin Mushrooms, Marijuana, a semi-automatic handgun, ammunition, digital scales and other drug paraphernalia, along with $600.00 in cash. The narcotics were packaged for distribution.
It was found that the driver had active warrants in Geauga County while the passenger had active warrants through Kent.

In October, the Portage County Sheriff’s Office made a traffic stop for a vehicle with one headlight on Cleveland Road in Ravenna Township, OH. During the traffic stop, Deputies located approximately 2.25 pounds of marijuana, 26 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, three quarters of a pound of THC edibles and $2,500.00 in US currency. Along with those confiscations, the Portage County Sheriff’s Office was able to seize the vehicle for forfeiture pending the outcome of the court proceedings.
The Portage County Sheriff’s Office is committed to combating the drug epidemic and will continue to be proactive in these enforcement efforts.
